RF Microneedling 101 – What It Is & Why It Works

These days, there are many skin rejuvenation techniques to help you counter some of the most common unwanted skin features, including wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and so much more. At Pinnacle Dermatology, we use RF microneedling to treat a range of common and chronic skin features and conditions. But, what exactly is this treatment and how does it work?

How RF Microneedling Works

RF (radiofrequency) microneedling works by combining radiofrequency energy with tiny needles to promote collagen and elastin production. The needles create micro-channels in the skin, and the radiofrequency generates heat that encourages blood to rush to the site. This influx of blood means that more collagen and elastin can be produced in the area to heal the skin.

Effectively, it triggers the body’s natural defense response. Collagen and elastin are important because they help your skin remain tight, plump, and smooth. Over time, the production of these things will decrease, which is why our skin starts to sag and develop wrinkles. So, RF microneedling is a counter to this.

Results of RF Microneedling

This procedure can present some striking results for each patient. Primarily, RF microneedling is used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, smoothing out your skin with more collagen.

Furthermore, it has also been used to clear many blemishes from the skin. People who suffer from acne scars, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, stretch marks, or enlarged pores will all benefit from this treatment. Boosting collagen & elastin production and triggering the skin’s defense response will make the targeted area healthier. This can clear up numerous skin issues in one or several sittings, leaving you with younger and healthier-looking skin.

Procedure Overview

Prior to the procedure, you’ll have a full assessment to determine if the treatment is suitable for you. If it is, then the process itself will look like this:

  • The target area will be thoroughly cleaned to prevent infections – this is usually done with alcohol wipes
  • A topical anesthetic is applied to the area to numb it and ensure you feel an as little discomfort as possible throughout the procedure
  • A state-of-the-art microneedling device is then applied to your skin and makes tiny micro-channels with the needles. While this happens, the device emits RF energy to disperse heat into the skin through the micro-channels
  • A soothing solution is then applied at the end of the treatment

In total, the RF microneedling treatment can take around 10-20 minutes from start to finish. RF microneedling is not a painful procedure thanks to the topical anesthetic, though you may experience some redness and rawness when this wears off. The good news is that it fades very quickly and the soothing solution helps to minimize side effects.
